Young's Seafood Limited
In the holocaust of World War II, Douglas and Malcolm Young joined the services, leaving their brothers, Gordon and Stanley to continue the business in the most trying conditions imaginable.

Shortages - wartime rationing of butter brought a halt to production of potted shrimps; the enormous fluctuation of catches caused by fishing fleets operating in war time conditions; and perhaps, most importantly of all, the chaotic, almost impossible problem of distribution.

With general shortages of all foods, good supplies of seafood with this high protein content were particularly important.

Young’s premises survived the bombing that affected nearby areas, but the war years were a difficult period for a fish selling company. At the end of the war, Douglas and Malcolm Young returned to the business and were later to play important roles in the growth of the Group.

Perhaps the second most important date in the history of Young’s is 1946; the date that the first commercial frozen products were produced by W Young & Son (Grimsby) Ltd. The same year saw the quick frozen shrimps and other shellfish, and also Scotch salmon, at Annan.
